Teaching Philosophy

I believe whole-heartedly in a blended approach to piano learning.

There are three key tenets in my approach:

Creativity

right-brain stuff

Reading

left-brain stuff

Technique

A FEW OTHER THINGS OF NOTE:

PRACTISING:  I believe it is integral to a child's development--musical or otherwise--to learn good practice habits. Research continues to show that it is the right kind of practice that determines success, and not an innate gift or talent. I am currently so obsessed with this topic, that I have been asked to teach courses at the Acadia University School of Music on practising. My goal is to arm each of my students with effective approaches and strategies in ways that are FUN, rewarding, motivational, and transferable to other disciplines. See my book list and practising tips for more info.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNTIES:  Sharing your music makes other people happy, too! And you should be proud to show off your hard work! I will endeavor to find as many opportunities for you to play for others. Students are encouraged to attend recitals and the odd performance class. Students working in RCM are encouraged, but not required, to take examinations, and they are also encouraged, but not required, to participate in music festivals. If the idea of performing stresses you out, let's talk! And in the meantime, check out some info on performance anxiety.
