Creativity

I believe that creativity plays an important part in musical and right- and left-brain development (and is fun, of course!). So this includes improvisation, composition, and playing by ear... It also includes learning how to "chord" (as folk, jazz, or rock, etc.). Learning to read notes is important, but what students remember their whole life is how to improvise or chord a Christmas carol or favourite pop tune. I also encourage singing! (Hello, serotonin!)

Artistry is also possible in the early stages, thanks to creative performance. A seven-year-old can move an audience to tears while playing a simple improvisation exercise. Getting outside oneself, thinking about others, and learning the power and reward of music is a powerful experience even for a little one…

The one drawback is that with all this extra creativity added to the “curriculum,” traditional progress through the levels is sometimes not as quick as in other studios. I will NOT push a student into the next level if they are not ready. Progress is deep and lateral, but not necessarily fast, especially in the early levels.
