Teaching Philosophy

Reading

Students will also learn to read conventional notation and play pieces from standard method books.

The purpose for this is three-fold:

a) It helps them with the theory behind the music, deepening their understanding of chords and scales and such (which they’re doing whether they're playing classical or folk or jazz or rock or whatever). The method books are progressive, so they improve steadily in all aspects (i.e., reading, technique, artistry, theory).

b) It teaches them work ethic, problem-solving strategies, good practice habits, and is great for the more analytic left-brain development.

c) Most of the music they play is more complex than what they can improvise... This has many benefits, but among the biggest is the emotional content of some of these pieces. They learn to emote through the music that someone else has written, and this is a very powerful experience. It also inspires tricks and patterns and techniques for their own creations (see Creativity).
